As an Indonesian, you may notice how our earth is getting hotter each day and it’s truly unsettling. In 2022 BMKG Climate Change Analysis Coordinator, Kadarsah, has predicted that 2023’s temperature rise will beat 2016’s hottest record in Indonesia. And then, In April 2023 NOAA announced that April 2023 was Earth’s fourth warmest on record.

Furthermore, if we fail to take action to slow down the pace of climate change, it can lead to more severe consequences. These consequences can be devastating to the economy and political stability. Not only in terms of material losses, but they can also cost lives. A clear example is the recent landslide disaster in Natuna, which tragically claimed the lives of dozens of people. In light of these circumstances, it becomes crucial to explore and implement effective actions to combat climate change. Let us begin by embracing three simple yet consequential measures:

1. Reduce our reliance on private vehicles

By embracing alternatives such as public transport and walking, we can make a significant impact. This shift not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. Let us drive change by rethinking our transportation choices and embracing greener alternatives for a better and brighter future.

2. Reduce the use of plastic and implement 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)

Say goodbye to disposable products and instead embrace eco-friendly alternatives like reusable shopping bags. By making this shift, we not only reduce plastic waste but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Together, we can create a plastic-free lifestyle that ensures a healthier planet for generations to come.

3. Join the Reforestation Movement

Reforestation holds the key to cleaner air and a cooler planet. By planting trees and restoring forests, we not only combat air pollution but also contribute to the absorption of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas. This transformative endeavor revitalizes ecosystems, protects biodiversity, and creates a sustainable future for all. Let’s unite, plant the seeds of change, and be part of the remarkable impact of reforestation by joining Kata Gaia Local Project.

“KATA GAIA” is a local project by AIESEC in Unpad, dedicated to tackling the 13th Sustainable Development Goal: Climate Action. By becoming a part of KATA GAIA, you have the power to create a significant impact through social action. Whether you choose to contribute to reforestation efforts, reduce plastic waste, or promote sustainable practices, your actions will have far-reaching effects.
