Jakarta, 17 Agustus 2024Have you ever wondered what it’s like to volunteer? To dedicate your time and energy to a cause bigger than yourself? Volunteering can be a profoundly rewarding experience, offering opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and making a tangible impact on society.

What about volunteering and traveling at the same time? Imagine combining your passion for helping others with the thrill of exploring new cultures. This is where AIESEC’s Global Volunteer program shines. By providing platforms for young people to engage in international volunteer projects, AIESEC bridges the gap between fun activities and adventure.

Sounds like a fun activity right? Okay, let’s take a look at Maira’s Global Volunteer journey. Diajeng Humaira (or you can call her Maira) is on an awesome adventure! She’s trading in her everyday life for a global volunteer experience. Right now, she’s soaking up the sun and culture in Turkey while giving back to the community.

“How has your life journey been so far? Are you satisfied with it? What are some of the most memorable experiences you’ve had?”

My journey has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, but overall it’s been incredibly amazing. I cherish every moment of it. I encountered so many fascinating things, from the Turkish culture to the totally different food compared to Indonesia. Also, the architecture of this country are so beautiful and enchanting.

“Then, there are many destinations on GV, why you choosed Turkey?”

Simply because I’m interested in europe region countries, and turkey has my heart. I love the vibe this country gave, the mosques, the cruises, the seas, everything about turkey piqued my interest since a long time.

“What epic adventures have unfolded in Turkey? Maybe like, where have you been?”

The main global activity is teaching in a kindergarten. I’m so much grateful that I’ve been chosen to be a teacher in such a prestigious school. They have so many creative ways to engage and stimulate the children so they can discover new things, but in a way that’s fun for their age. We had amazing summer activities like playing in the sand, swimming, summer camp at a resort, even gardening. The teachers are very welcoming and kind. I’ve even been invited to their birthday parties! The kids are super curious and friendly. They rely on me a lot but are also very adventurous. I get to have 3 times a day meal there, and had small treats like ice cream, cookies or fruits with them on our break time. On the last day of summer school we had a picnic!

I’ve also visited some iconic landmarks in Istanbul, such as the Galata Tower, Dolmabahce Palace, Taksim Square, and many more. One time I found an Indonesian restaurant here, hahaha! I was served their iconic çay (drinking tea) every time I had a meal in a Turkish restaurant. I went to a market in Eminönü as well, a big bazaar by the sea where they sell many things such as beautiful traditional jewelry, clothes. And omg each of the stores gave me free samples of their sweets, they always tried to persuade me to come to their store even my friends and I were dragged inside to have tea and baklava. There are so many affordable items there as well, making it a great spot for shopping. Also, they’re very kind to foreigners that they will treat you so nice and being helpful. I also tried the famous turkish ice cream haha one that play tricks when you buy them, it was soo good and such a fun. The seas are also beautiful, so many birdies in the sky right above the cruises. And Turkish people are so so kind to animals, you can see animal foods all over the street for the stray cats and dogs.

Most transportation here consists of buses and trains, and oh my, it makes me do a lot of walking since I’m used to using public transportation everywhere back in Indonesia. It’s tiring, especially on hot summer days. But, by walking, I get to enjoy the surroundings and have free sightseeing. If I get lucky, sometimes there’s even people giving me free çay in small cups or even flowers<3.

“How has volunteering abroad shaped you as a person? Are there any new values or perspectives that you’ve gained from this experience? Moreover, which skills do you feel have developed the most during this time?”

GV has had a huge impact on me in countless ways. One thing’s for sure, it’s helped me break out of my comfort zone. I’ve tried new things I never thought I would, changed my routines and habits, and pushed myself beyond what I believed were my limits. It’s helped me achieve both personal and professional goals, like being punctual for class, reminding others to be on time, being selfless, helpful, brave, making new friends, learning new things, and so much more.

“Why do you think people should join global volunteer or do you have any advice for prospective participants who want to join GV ?“

GV is like, the ultimate jackpot! Because I’m convinced nothing else will ever give you an opportunity as open as GV. You may find other great things in many other places and times, but you will never get the same experience as you will after joining GV. Imagine yourself in a totally new world, meeting awesome people you’ve never seen before. It’s gonna blow your mind and make you into a super version of yourself no matter what challenges you may face.

Trust me, it’s gonna be a rollercoaster, but the best kind of rollercoaster! You’ll have ups and downs, but every bump in the road makes the good times even sweeter. Just chill, enjoy the ride, and know that everything will work out perfectly in the end.

Woohoo! It’s such a wondrous and exciting story, giving us a glimpse of Maira’s incredible adventure with AIESEC! Her story is just one example of the amazing experiences waiting for you. If you’re itching to explore the world, make a difference, and have the time of your life, then global volunteering might be your calling. Remember, it’s not just about the destination, it’s about the journey and the person you become along the way.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags, open your heart, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
