Hi, you are the one on the screen who is trying to find the answer about “switching careers”!!

Do you ever have distracting nights where you overthink your future, young peeps? Ouh, that’s the worst feeling ever!! But, that’s okay, now, you find the treasure article to fix your mind.

You might think that maybe your current major is not what you want to do for a living. And maybe, you think that your new interest suits you the most. Or is not just a “maybe” but it’s a “fact”. You start to imagine what happens if you go to another milestone and switch your career. So, let’s dive deep into this topic.

What is a career switch?

Basically switching careers is the big action that you take in your life when you already have a specific major or profession but you decide to go to another profession that is not aligned with your major. In this modern world, people will go to pursue things that they want and bravely take the risk for a better future life. Of course, it takes a long time and a lot of consideration. The reason behind it can be various, it might be because of their true dreams or their absolute passion or for a better life, etc. It goes the same way with Ela Octafiyani, former LCVP of Talent Management of AIESEC in UNS 22.23

From International Relations to HR Intern at one of Multinational FMCG Company.

Ela Octafiyani, or known as Elo is one of the talented alumni of AIESEC In UNS. She is LCVP of Talent Management of AIESEC in UNS 22.23. Graduated from International Relations, but now, she is Intern at the HR Department of Multinational FMCG Company. How does it supposedly happen?

Well, just like other people in their 20s, She is confused about everything. But she tried to assess her life. In her journey at AIESEC In UNS, she had the opportunity to join as an OC of a national project and that time she got new insight.

After that moment, she mindfully assesses what kind of activity that gives her “sparks”, and She realized that she  feels satisfied in her life when people around her  can develop the best version of themselves. Elo clearly knows what she wants to do. She knows her goals and starts achieving the closest goals that are directed to her milestone, being an HR.

“Can I Switch My Careers…?”

The answer is definitely “YES, YOU CAN, IF YOU WANT”. The key to this is yourself.  Elo said that just like growth mindset principles, she personally believes that anything can be learned. As long as we have Willingness to Learn, Goal or Ambition, Supportive Environment, and Resources.

“ People who switch their career means they are very growth mindset people, they have high self-awareness about themselves and they are solution oriented. They know what they actually want in life, have strong bravery to work harder to achieve their goals, and not let their fear eat them.” Elo said. So, try to take a look at yourself, do you have The Willingness to Learn, Goal or Ambition, Supportive Environment, and Resources.?

What Things to Prepare Before Switching Careers?

Like what Elo said, she uses the Ikigai Method to define what she really wants. The Ikigai method is normally used to help people know one’s purpose, passions and aspirations built on exercises that enable you to define your own goals according to your values and present challenges.

Open up your journal book, and try to answer these following questions.

  1. Your passion (what you love)
  2. Your vocation (what you’re good at)
  3. Your mission (what the world needs)
  4. Your profession (what you can be paid for)

After reading what you write down to answer those questions, you can brood over and find the answer. Go to instagram @aiesecuns to find more self development topics that you need.
